My favourite fish in my favourite soup! There’s nothing like a comforting, spicy bowl of soup to warm you up. Tilapia is my favourite fish as it’s so tender and tasty! It’s a lean source of protein with only 3g of fat per 3.5 ounces and is high in vitamins and minerals. Combined with natural ingredients in this soup, this dish is one to try. Not to mention, it only took 25 minutes total to prepare the ingredients and cook it! Fish soup is a staple in Ghanaian households and unlike Western soups, we never eat the soup on its own. Our soups are usually eaten with a carbohydrate or preferably, a swallow (a root vegetable pounded into a sticky ball). My favourite swallow to eat light soup with is fufu (a cassava-based swallow) but other options are banku (corn dough) or eba (garri). This soup is also tasty with white rice, white potatoes and sweet potatoes. Without further ado, here is the recipe:-



Servings 4 people


  • 1 medium-sized tilapia fillet (cleaned and de-scaled)
  • 1 red onion
  • 500ml water
  • 3 medium-sized tomatoes
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • 1 medium ginger root
  • 5 habañero/kpakpo shito peppers
  • 1 tsp roasted curry powder
  • 1/2 tbsp dried basil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 100g fish seasoning cubes


  1. Clean and cut your tilapia into small pieces. 

  2. In a blender, add your chopped red onion, garlic, ginger and a splash of water. Blend until smooth. 

  3. Place your tilapia pieces into a large pot along with your water, fish seasoning cubes and blended spice mix. 

  4. Add your whole tomatoes and chilis to the pot. Place on a medium heat.

  5. After 5 minutes, take the tomatoes and chills out and add them to a blender and blend. After a further 5 minutes, take out the tilapia pieces and set them to the side.

  6. Pour your blended tomato and chilli mixture back in the pot. Add your roasted curry powder and salt to taste. Add extra whole peppers if you like. Cover and let cook for 10 minutes.

  7. Add your tilapia pieces back into the pot and cook for a further 5 minutes. Take out and enjoy! x
